when you visit your favorite website they often remember you and how you use the site this happens thanks to a tiny bit of information called a cookie, you don't see it but cookies are part of nearly everything you do on the web. When you visit a new website a cookie from the site is often saved on your computer automatically it has an ID that is unique to you and data on your visit. Web browser collects cookies from sites you visit over time then when you return to a site your web browser and the website may use cookies to know if you are a new or returning visitor.
Most Common Types:
1.Session Cookie:
Session cookie can remember information from your visit but as soon as you close your browser they go away.
Example:
if you added items to a shopping cart the session cookie can help the site to remember your items even if you visit other sites as long as you don't close your browser.
2.Persistent Cookie:
Persistent cookie these don't go until they expire they help to remember things like your login information and personal details over time when you close your browser and a website still remembers your settings on your next visit.
3.HTTP only cookie:
An HTTP only cookie can only be used via HTTP or HTTPS, and therefore cannot be accessed by javascript. this reduces the threat of session cookie theft via cross-site scripting(XSS).
4.Secure Cookie:
A secure cookie can only be used via HTTPS. this ensures the cookie data is encrypted, reducing the exposure to cookie theft via spying.
5.Third-Part Cookie:
Third-party cookies are cookies set with domains, that are different from the one shown on the address bar. Privacy setting options are most modern browsers allow you to block third-party tracking cookies.
Cookies are a harmless and normal part of using the web they don't carry viruses run software or see anything on a computer but the information in some cookies can be read by advertisers for instance to collect and use information about sites you visited this means you may visit a specific site and then start to advertising related to all over the web you can always use your browser preferences to delete cookies for a fresh start and stop collecting them for a specific website using your browser privacy settings and every browser type has its own cookies that's why cites cannot remember you across computer and mobile phones. Generally, cookies are safe and useful in fact they can be very useful to website owners who want to understand and improve the website experiences based on data about visitors. Cookie makes the web feel like a little more like home.
